Fátima Viveiros earned her Ph.D. in Geology with a specialization in Volcanology from the University of the Azores in 2011. She also holds a degree in Biology/Geology (Education Pathway, 2001) and a Master’s degree in Volcanology and Geological Risks (2004), both from the same university.

From September 2017 to February 2023, she served as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of the Azores (UAc) and has been an associate professor since February 2023. She has coordinated and taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on volcanology, geochemistry, geological risks, geographic information systems, and civil protection (emergency planning, crisis management, and response mechanisms). She has supervised several doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate students, as well as over twenty internships primarily associated with the IVAR Academy and the ERASMUS mobility program.

Her main area of expertise is gas geochemistry, with a particular interest in the study of hydrothermal fumaroles and diffuse carbon dioxide emission zones. Her research is primarily focused on volcanic environments, encompassing not only the Azores archipelago but also other geographic regions such as Cape Verde, Chile, Ecuador, Spain, Italy, Nepal, Romania, and Russia, as reflected in her extensive scientific output. She has developed geochemical monitoring techniques for active volcanoes, conducted research in geothermal exploration areas, and quantified greenhouse gases emitted to the atmosphere. Additionally, she has conducted studies to assess the hazards and risks associated with exposure to volcanic gases.

Since starting her career in 2001, she has received various scientific research grants through international research projects and advanced training programs funded by the Regional Government of the Azores and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

From 2016 to 2023, she served as the deputy director of the Institute for Research in Volcanology and Risk Assessment (IVAR), a core research unit of the University of the Azores. She also coordinates IVAR’s Gas Geochemistry Scientific Unit. Between 2015 and 2023, she was a board member of the Azores Center for Seismic-Volcanic Information and Surveillance (CIVISA), representing the University of the Azores.

Viveiros has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications in international journals and books. She has participated in several regional (5), national (7), and international (10) research projects. Notably, she served as the Principal Investigator (PI) of the international TER-CO2 project in 2014, funded under the activities of the Deep Carbon Observatory (USA), and as the PI for the University of the Azores in the HEATSTORE project (2018–2021), funded by the Geothermica Era-Net network.

In recent years, she has been involved in projects such as HABAIR, SONDA, and MAGAT, which aim to develop sensors for volcanic areas. In 2021, she participated in two scientific missions to La Palma, contributing to the installation of a geochemical sensor network for monitoring the Cumbre Vieja Volcano, which remains operational.

She is a member of the editorial boards of the peer-reviewed international journals Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research and Frontiers in Chemistry and Frontiers in Earth Science, since November 2018 and May 2022, respectively.

In December 2015, Fátima Viveiros was honored with the Deep Carbon Observatory Emerging Leader Award, granted by the Alfred Sloan Foundation (USA).
